Finding what makes life complete

The statistics are startling. Divorce, immorality, substance abuse and other issues are knocking at the door of the church. It would be one matter if only non-church members were struggling with these items, but it affects church members and gang members alike, reaching from the pulpit to the pavement. Where do we turn to find answers…or an escape from this path?

The other day I was in a conversation with a person who, “What makes life complete?” I answered in the traditional fashion with, “To know God and to enjoy Him forever.” However, after the conversation continued, I figured out that he was really asking, “How can a Christian actually make this a reality in our society?”

It was at that moment I realized what makes life complete as a Christian. You must possess three foundations in your life: belief in something, someone to love and something to do.

You must have something to believe. Without a conviction that God is present and working in your daily life, you will always be searching for answers to some hard questions: Why am I here? What is the meaning of life? What happens to me when I die? Believing that God loves us so much that when we were separated from Him due to our sin, He became human and paid the price for our sin is comforting and encouraging to know as I walk through this life.

The second foundation is to have someone to love. Can you imagine a world without love? To really have life count, you have to love someone and have someone love you. My first priority is my relationship with the Lord. So many lose this in the plethora of religious activities, but it is the foundation for a meaningful life. My wife is only second to the Lord, followed by my children. Maintaining a proper balance of relationships in your life will allow you to discover true meaning.

Finally, you have to discover something to do. What brings you joy? It has been said that if you can find out what makes you laugh, cry and get excited, means you have discovered your true calling in this life. To find true meaning in life, you must discover that life is not about you. Life was here before you got here, and it will be here after you leave. Spare yourself the agony of trying to be the king of your hill, or to be the one with the most toys. It will all turn to dust. Find out what will really last in this world. Volunteer at the church, serve in the shelter, give to a good cause, or at least read a book. Do something with your life today.

The good news is that you can learn today what makes life count and start making it happen. Don’t wait until tomorrow, next week or next month, start today. Release these three aspects in your life and find out the difference it can make. The danger is to read this and not act upon it. So many people want their life to be changed, but before it can be changed there must be a turning point. Today can be your turning point to living life to the fullest!
